Parents and students
have asked many questions regarding absences for college visits, and
a great deal of misunderstanding has accompanied the discussion of
these questions. The information below is an effort to explain the
district's position so that college-bound students and their parents
may make appropriate plans.
The district does not
designate any days as "College Visit Days." We encourage students to
schedule these visits during time when school is not in session such
as holidays or staff development days.
Parents always have
the option of writing a note for a student making a college visit on
a school day to have an excused absence. This allows the student to
make up any class work missed due to the absence. There are no grade
penalties for excused absences. Sometimes parents request that
students visiting college campuses not be counted absent from school
at all on that day. Only students involved in school sponsored
extracurricular activities may be counted present when they are not
physically on campus.
Students who are
trying to achieve perfect attendance or maintain the requirements
for exam exemptions must be aware that college visits count against
perfect attendance and exam exemption requirements.
